Water Weight Calculator

Instantly calculate the exact weight of water. Use known volumes (gallons, liters) or calculate weight directly from the dimensions of a tank or pool.

Enter your measurements to determine the exact weight and volume of the water.

How to Calculate the Weight of Water

Water is incredibly heavy, and underestimating its weight is a common mistake that can lead to structural damage when setting up home aquariums, hot tubs, or temporary swimming pools. Our Water Weight Calculator instantly converts volume or physical dimensions into exact weight limits.

If you are building structural supports for a large water tank or pool deck, accuracy is essential. Be sure to check out our other Construction Calculators to ensure your framing materials can handle the load.

The Density of Water

The math behind water weight relies on the physical properties of water. At room temperature, pure water has a very specific density.

  • 1 US Gallon weighs exactly 8.34 pounds (3.78 kg).
  • 1 Liter weighs exactly 1 kilogram (2.20 lbs).
  • 1 Cubic Foot of water weighs roughly 62.4 pounds.

Note: Saltwater is slightly denser than freshwater, weighing about 8.56 lbs per US gallon.

Why Dimension Calculations Matter

Often, you won't know the total gallons of a custom container, hot tub, or flooded area. By entering the Length, Width, and Depth (the actual water level, not the height of the walls), we can calculate the total cubic volume.

For example, a standard 55-gallon rectangular aquarium actually holds about 450 pounds of water. Once you add the weight of the glass tank, gravel, and equipment, that single piece of furniture can weigh over 600 pounds, requiring specialized floor joist support!
