Understanding Drag Racing Formulas
For decades, racers have used mathematical formulas to benchmark their vehicle's performance. Based on the widely accepted formulas popularized by Wallace Racing and Hale's formulas, you can accurately estimate your engine's horsepower by observing how fast it can move a specific weight across a 1/4 mile track.
These calculations rely on the fundamental physics of power, mass, and acceleration. Keep in mind that these tools assume a perfect launch (optimal 60-foot times), excellent traction, and appropriate gearing. Poor track conditions or wheel spin will result in a slower ET, which might make the calculator underestimate your true horsepower.
The Formulas We Use
This calculator utilizes the classic mathematical formulas used by drag racers worldwide:
- HP from ET:
Horsepower = Weight / (ET / 5.825)³ - ET from HP:
ET = 5.825 × (Weight / HP)^(1/3) - MPH from HP:
MPH = 234 × (HP / Weight)^(1/3)
Note: Weight is measured in pounds (lbs), and ET is Elapsed Time in seconds.
Flywheel vs. Wheel Horsepower
It is vital to understand that this calculator estimates Flywheel Horsepower (Crank HP), not Wheel Horsepower (WHP).
When power travels from your engine through the transmission, driveshaft, and axles, a percentage of it is lost due to friction and mechanical inefficiency (drivetrain loss). To estimate your Wheel Horsepower from these results, subtract roughly 15% for a manual transmission and 18-20% for an automatic transmission.
