The Golden Rule: Bits vs. Bytes
The most common misunderstanding in networking is the difference between a bit (lowercase 'b') and a Byte (uppercase 'B'). This tiny capitalization makes a massive difference in calculating transfer times.
Bits (Network Speed)
A bit is the smallest unit of digital data (a 1 or a 0). ISPs advertise bandwidth in Megabits per second (Mbps). If you have "100 Meg internet", you have 100 Mbps.
Bytes (File Size)
There are 8 bits in 1 Byte. File sizes on your computer (and download speeds shown in your web browser) are measured in MegaBYTES (MB or MB/s).
Mathematical Conversion Formula:
To find your true download speed in computer terms, you must divide your ISP's advertised speed by 8.
True Speed (MB/s) = Advertised Speed (Mbps) รท 8
Example: A 100 Mbps connection translates to a maximum theoretical download speed of 12.5 MB/s.
What is Network Overhead?
You might notice that even if you calculate your speed perfectly, the download still takes a bit longer than expected. This is due to Network Overhead.
When data is transferred across the internet, it isn't sent as raw files. It is broken down into "packets". Each packet requires additional data attached to it (like digital shipping labels), including IP addresses, TCP protocols, error-checking codes, and encryption. This extra data consumes your bandwidth capacity.

Why is my 100 Mbps internet downloading at only 12 MB/s?
Internet Service Providers advertise speed in MegaBITS per second (Mbps). However, browsers and software display file sizes in MegaBYTES (MB). Since there are 8 bits in 1 byte, you must divide your Mbps speed by 8 to get your maximum theoretical download speed in MB/s. 100 Mbps divided by 8 equals exactly 12.5 MB/s.
How long does it take to download a 50GB game on a 1 Gbps connection?
On a perfect 1 Gigabit per second (1000 Mbps) connection, a 50 Gigabyte (GB) file will take approximately 6 minutes and 50 seconds to download. However, real-world speeds may be slower (taking closer to 8 or 9 minutes) due to server bottlenecks, network overhead, or Wi-Fi interference.
Does this calculator work for both Download and Upload speeds?
Yes. Bandwidth mathematics are identical regardless of the direction of the data transfer. Simply input your upload speed (which is usually lower than your download speed on asymmetric residential connections) into the network speed box to find your upload time.
