Mastering Unit Conversions
Whether you're following an international recipe, interpreting scientific data, or buying construction materials, you'll inevitably need to convert between the Metric and Imperial systems. Our Universal Unit Converter provides high-precision conversions for Length, Weight, Volume, Area, and Temperature all in one place.
Metric vs. Imperial Systems
The Metric system (International System of Units, or SI) is based on powers of 10, making calculations highly straightforward (e.g., 1000 grams = 1 kilogram). Almost the entire globe uses this system for trade and daily life.
The Imperial system (and US Customary Units) is used primarily in the United States, Liberia, and Myanmar. It uses historic, standardized measurements like inches, pounds, and gallons. Converting between the two systems requires specific fractional constants (e.g., exactly 2.54 centimeters per inch).
Temperature is Different
Unlike length or weight, where you can simply multiply by a ratio (like x 2.2 for kg to lbs), temperature scales don't start at the same zero point.
- Celsius to Fahrenheit:
(°C × 9/5) + 32 = °F - Fahrenheit to Celsius:
(°F - 32) × 5/9 = °C
The calculator handles these complex offset formulas automatically when you select the Temperature category.
