Understanding CGPA

CGPA (Cumulative Grade Point Average) represents your overall academic performance across all completed semesters or terms. While your GPA might fluctuate from one semester to the next, your CGPA tracks your continuous average from the day you started.

Our CGPA Calculator mathematically weights each of your semesters based on the number of credits taken, ensuring a perfectly accurate cumulative score, whether you are on a 4.0 scale or a 10.0 scale.

Why Not Just Average the GPAs?

A common mistake students make is simply adding up their semester GPAs and dividing by the number of semesters. This is mathematically incorrect because it ignores credit weight.

If you took 18 credits in Semester 1 and scored a 3.0, and then took only 6 credits in Semester 2 and scored a 4.0, your CGPA is not 3.5. Because Semester 1 had three times as many credits, it holds three times as much weight in your overall CGPA.

The CGPA Formula

To find the true Cumulative GPA, you use a weighted average formula:

CGPA = Total Grade Points รท Total Credits

  • Total Grade Points: For each semester, multiply the Semester GPA by the Semester Credits, then add all these values together.
  • Total Credits: The sum of all credits attempted across all semesters.
