The Standard Weight Formula
The mathematical formula to calculate the weight of any steel plate is:
Weight (kg) = Length (m) × Width (m) × Thickness (mm) × 7.85
- 7.85: This represents the density of Mild Steel, which is 7850 kg/m³ (or 7.85 g/cm³).
- If all your inputs are in millimeters (mm), the formula changes slightly to:
(L × W × T × 7.85) / 1,000,000.
Common Plate Sizes
In the steel industry, plates are commonly sold in standard dimensions. Here are standard sizes you might encounter:
- 8 ft × 4 ft (Approx. 2500 mm × 1250 mm)
- 10 ft × 5 ft (Approx. 3000 mm × 1500 mm)
