How to Calculate Work Hours

Tracking time accurately is essential for payroll, timesheets, and project management. Whether you are an employee verifying your check or a freelancer billing a client, our Hours Calculator makes time math incredibly simple.

Once you calculate your total decimal hours for the week, you can easily plug that number into our Paycheck Calculator to estimate your net take-home pay.

Hours & Minutes vs. Decimal Hours

Time is usually measured in a Base-60 format (60 minutes in an hour), but financial and payroll systems use Base-10 (decimals). You cannot simply replace the colon with a decimal point!

For example, working 8 hours and 30 minutes is not 8.30 hours. It is 8.50 decimal hours.

Decimal Hours = Minutes / 60

Our calculator provides the "Decimal Hours" conversion automatically so you can multiply it directly by your hourly wage.

12-Hour vs. 24-Hour Time

Most scheduling systems in the US rely on the 12-hour clock (AM/PM), which can make mental math confusing, especially for shifts that cross noon or midnight.

To calculate hours manually, it's often easier to convert PM times to 24-hour (military) time by adding 12 to the hour. For example, 5:00 PM becomes 17:00.

If a shift starts at 10:00 PM (22:00) and ends at 6:00 AM (06:00), the calculator recognizes that the end time is mathematically smaller than the start time and automatically adds 24 hours to the end time to accurately calculate an 8-hour shift.
